The Annotated "Save The Date"

From zoacard

  • A Map of Oregon, with a star on Portland: that's where it's all happening.
  • August 1, 2009: the date of the wedding.
  • Bacchanalian Revelry: that's what we do at weddings.
  • Calendar grid for the month of August, 2009: it's rectangular and helps provide a visual background.
  • I don't put too much stock in astrological signs, but (a) it's as good a place as any to put stock these days, and (b) it's fun to draw animals:
    • Lion: August 1 occurs under the constellation Leo, in the occidental zodiac.
    • Scorpion: Dan is a Scorpio in the occidental zodiac, being born on October 31st.
    • Goat: Zoe was born on January 17, so she is a Capricorn in the occidental zodiac. Also, August 1 is associated with the Ram in the Chinese zodiac, and that has nothing to do with stars.
    • Ox: 2009 is the Year of the Ox, in the Chinese zodiac. Again, nothing to do with stars.
  • I like numbers for mathematical, metaphorical, and spiritual reasons, and here are a few:
    • The seven-pointed star over Portland: seven is another number with interesting properties, and it is often embued with special significance. This gets silly after a while, since all numbers are interesting in some way. Whatever. There are seven colors in the visible specrum, and seven musical notes. This is fun, though: in addition to everything else, seven is an Octahedral Number. I didn't know what that meant either, so I went here, and enjoyed turning the geometric figures around.
    • The Three Suns (one held by the figure in the center, and two rising over the two images of Mt. Hood): three is a very powerful number, for lots of reasons. I'm particularly fond of the Heart-Brain-Body triumvirate, and its variations. Here's a whole website devoted to the number three, and this is a good article on the significance of the number three in American culture: THE NUMBER THREE IN AMERICAN CULTURE, By Professor Alan Dundes of Berkeley University.
