Hotels in Portland

Fancy: The Hotel Deluxe

  • They do not hold rooms for wedding parties so reserve soon.
  • If you tell them "Moskovitz/Huish" you will get 15% off.
  • Call (503) 219-2094 or (866) 895-2094 for reservations.
  • The hotel is downtown but a bit out of the way. (i.e. 10-15 block walk to the best coffee).
  • The King Feature rooms with views of the river are really nice.

Less expensive, but cool: The Jupiter Hotel

  • They do not hold rooms for wedding parties so reserve soon.

  • Click "deals" on the menu bar for the 20% off advance prepay option.

  • There is a music venue, bar and restaurant open 21/7 on site.

  • There are outdoor patios, and nice, gritty east side location.

  • May be loud. Probably not good for kids.

Engagement/Birthday weekend in SF

We went to SF for Dan's Birthday and had a grand time. We also got engaged! The dark picture is part of my head (I think) and Dan on the pier before dinner and the popping of the question. We had a great dinner even though there was no tower of seafood.

This is us at the Raider's game on Sunday. It was really fun. They lost. No surprise.

These are our very fancy engagement rings. We went to the SF Craft Museum where there was an exhibit about jewelry made from recycled junk. There was a craft table. I made Dan a Monopoly house and fruit tree (so domestic). He made me a hotdog (yum)!

The Annotated "Save The Date"

From zoacard

  • A Map of Oregon, with a star on Portland: that's where it's all happening.
  • August 1, 2009: the date of the wedding.
  • Bacchanalian Revelry: that's what we do at weddings.
  • Calendar grid for the month of August, 2009: it's rectangular and helps provide a visual background.
  • I don't put too much stock in astrological signs, but (a) it's as good a place as any to put stock these days, and (b) it's fun to draw animals:
    • Lion: August 1 occurs under the constellation Leo, in the occidental zodiac.
    • Scorpion: Dan is a Scorpio in the occidental zodiac, being born on October 31st.
    • Goat: Zoe was born on January 17, so she is a Capricorn in the occidental zodiac. Also, August 1 is associated with the Ram in the Chinese zodiac, and that has nothing to do with stars.
    • Ox: 2009 is the Year of the Ox, in the Chinese zodiac. Again, nothing to do with stars.
  • I like numbers for mathematical, metaphorical, and spiritual reasons, and here are a few:
    • The seven-pointed star over Portland: seven is another number with interesting properties, and it is often embued with special significance. This gets silly after a while, since all numbers are interesting in some way. Whatever. There are seven colors in the visible specrum, and seven musical notes. This is fun, though: in addition to everything else, seven is an Octahedral Number. I didn't know what that meant either, so I went here, and enjoyed turning the geometric figures around.
    • The Three Suns (one held by the figure in the center, and two rising over the two images of Mt. Hood): three is a very powerful number, for lots of reasons. I'm particularly fond of the Heart-Brain-Body triumvirate, and its variations. Here's a whole website devoted to the number three, and this is a good article on the significance of the number three in American culture: THE NUMBER THREE IN AMERICAN CULTURE, By Professor Alan Dundes of Berkeley University.
